New Facility Extends Community Reach
The mission of the Ocean Community YMCA is to bring individuals together through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. At the Y, no one is turned away from participating in membership, programs or summer camp due to their inability to pay. Expanding impact deeper into communities is at the core of the Y’s mission.
Today, the Ocean Community YMCA serves over 20,000 individuals of all ages, abilities and backgrounds at three branches, two summer day camps, a seasonal ice rink and through collaborations with schools and other charitable organizations.
The Champlin Foundation has been a lead partner in helping the Y achieve its mission over many years. This has included capital investments at Camp Watchaug and for facility improvements in Westerly and Richmond, as well as, annual financial assistance for camperships for deserving children. Most recently, the Champlin Foundation was the lead grantor in creating a modern state-of-the-art branch in Westerly, Rhode Island. This flagship facility has made it possible to create new programs to address critical social service needs including establishing a nationally recognized mentoring program for at-risk youth as well as an adaptive program for children with special needs. The expanded facility has also made it possible to deepen the Y’s reach into the community by doubling membership in just four years.
