A Lasting Gift for Future Generations

The Nature Conservancy is the world’s largest conservation organization, working in all 50 states and in more than 70 countries to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. In Rhode Island, the Conservancy protects Rhode Island’s green spaces, restores the health of our rivers and coastal waters, and inspires a new generation of conservation leaders. Science and partnerships are at the heart of everything we do.

In 1984, Rhode Island’s farmland was disappearing at an alarming rate and its forests were giving way to rampant subdivision. In defense of Rhode Island’s open space, The Champlin Foundation forged a dynamic partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to save scenic areas and other natural features that were of the greatest benefit to our state. It has been a tremendous success. From Rodman’s Hollow to the Carter Preserve, and from Tillinghast Pond to Goosewing Beach, Champlin’s incredible legacy endures in the preservation of Rhode Island’s special places.

Champlin’s investment in land protection has improved the quality of life of all Rhode Islanders. In nearly every community, lands conserved with Champlin grants have become a part of residents’ everyday lives, where they go to exercise, walk the dog, and be close to nature. The impact of Champlin’s extraordinary support for conservation is both immediate and lasting, connecting Rhode Islanders to nature for generations to come.
